Company Profile

Product Gallery
The Meikles Hotel is conveniently situated in the central business and shopping districts of Harare, overlooking Africa Unity Square and the colourful flower gardens. Since 1915, this famous hotel has been renowned for providing a very special brand of service and attention to detail. Consistently voted as one of the best hotels in Africa and Zimbabwe's premier hotel.

Meikles, consistently voted Zimbabwe's best city hotel, also consistently exceeds the expectations of guests. Meikles has 317 beautifully appointed deluxe rooms including luxurious balconied suites, various restaurants offering a wide choice in cuisine  an elegant tea lounge, an "Out of Africa" bar that is one of Harare's most popular venues for a drink and a chat, 15 banqueting and conference venues, and numerous facilities including a solar heated rooftop pool with bar and snack service, a gymnasium, a sauna, a hair salon, massage and beauty parlour, up market gift shops, travel and touring services, airport transfers, a 7am - 10pm business centre and a high level of security in and around the hotel.

Historical Details
In 1915 a charming hotel opened its doors in an elegant colonial building at the centre of the thriving city that is now Harare. The visionary who built and developed this hotel was businessman Thomas Meikle, whose name the hotel still proudly bears. The original Meikles, with its spacious, open verandahs, courteous service, value-for-money menus and comfortable accommodation, became synonymous with quality and friendship. "Meet you at Meikles" was and remains the recognition that there really is nowhere else in Harare that consistently delights those who seek nothing but the best.

Meikles has changed dramatically over the years, with the 'new' Meikles regularly rising Phoenix-like from the dust of demolition, as the hotel adapted to meet the ever-changing needs of a growing country. Today's magnificent hotel is not at all like the high-ceilinged, two-storied colonial building of its birth, but Mr Meikle's original commitment to the highest possible standard of product and service has not changed.

An enduring and much-loved feature of the history of Meikles is the legendary pair of lions now gazing out over Africa Unity Square from the north wing. The two lions were created in 1912 by Italian sculptor Euletto Jotto and for many decades were on the hotel cupola overlooking Sam Nujoma (was Second Street). Legend had it that the lions roared every time a virgin walked by....

The history of Meikles is tightly woven into the history of Zimbabwe as the hotel has consistently found itself at the heart of the political drama that has shaped this country, since the arrival in 1890 of the first European settlers. The first parliament of what was then the Colony of Southern Rhodesia met in Meikles in 1924, and the hotel has since then been a neutral meeting place for African nationalists, British Governors, Constitutional Negotiators, Prime Ministers and Presidents seeking solutions to difficult political questions.

With them have come the world's press as well as Commonwealth and United Nations officials, Heads of State, Royalty and other guests of the Republic of Zimbabwe, at major occasions such as Independence celebrations or international summits.

Big Cave Camp

The Big Cave Camp wilderness area was purchased by Cyril Waddy in 1947 and has been in the family ever since. The Waddys are from pioneering stock and have lived in the country for four generations. Avid bush lovers, the entire family spend a large part of their time exploring, hiking and learning about the many species of trees, flora and fauna that abound in the Matobo Hills. Big Cave Camp was started by Mike and Yvonne Waddy as a recreational facility for the family in 1980 and was subsequently developed as a tourist facility by David and Caron Waddy. Dave can recall how they first lived in a two man tent, with no electricity or generator. Everything was either paraffin or gas operated. A true test for his new bride! Today they are still very much involved in promoting tourism to Zimbabwe, after what has been a tough few years. The lodge was expanded to accommodate 16 guests, the property restored to pristine condition and a wildlife sanctuary was created for the natural species of game that occur in the Matobo Hills. The Waddy family continues to live and prosper in this beautiful area.

Guludo Beach Lodge

Guludo Beach Lodge

We set out with a single-minded determination to demonstrate just how successful integrating philanthropy into a tourism business could be. Today, looking at Guludo Beach Lodge and its impact on the surrounding area, we are very proud to see the vision realised. In 2002 we were looking for somewhere with excellent tourism potential next to extreme poverty. Guludo was the perfect fit. Guludo Beach Lodge is situated on a 12km white, palm-fringed beach in one of the poorest areas of Mozambique. Our model encompasses a commercial enterprise (Guludo Beach Lodge), which operates using fair trade principles and a charity (Nema Foundation), which partners with 16 local communities to implement projects. The lodge stimulates the local economy and develops skills while the charity tackles the root causes of poverty and environmental devastation, which are funded by donations from the lodge, its guests and our charity partners. Through our model we have provided access to clean water for 20,000 people, a school meal every day for 800 malnourished children, secondary school scholarships for 129 scholars, construction of 2 primary schools, distributed 9,500 mosquito nets and household training in nutrition, malaria, HIV, hygiene and sanitation.  The lodge has over 150 local suppliers, employs 70 staff and 8 local craft enterprises sell their products to our guests… and this is all just the very tip of the iceberg. Now, because of the lodge, the local economy is developing, children are healthier, poverty is falling, environmental pressures are decreasing and there is a buzz of optimism in the region. If you are thinking that surely our business must suffer as a result of our philanthropy, you're wrong. In fact, while our competitors struggled to stay afloat, we experienced exceptional growth that is continuing into the future. We passionately believe that other businesses can adopt the same approach and play a significant part in tackling serious social and environmental issues while continuing to achieve ambitious and profitable growth.
