Elsa's Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by George and Joy Adamson's biographical book and film 'Born Free'. Winner of the Good Safari Guide's 'Best Safari Property in Africa' award, Elsa's Kopje is renowned for being one of the most elegant lodges in Africa, with the most spectacular setting. It is the best upmarket location to view rhino in their natural habitat in Kenya. An award winning design with stunning views from the open bar, lounge and dining room, Elsa's Kopje is almost invisible to the eye as you approach its home on Mughwango Hill. It blends into the rocky crags of the "kopje" (small hill), built above the site of George Adamson's original campsite. Every sumptuous cottage is the ultimate 'room-with-a-view', uniquely designed and crafted, incorporating the natural features of the rocky hillside. Elsa's Kopje was designed and built by Stefano Cheli, and opened in 1999 by Dr Richard Leakey, and Virgina McKenna, the star of the 1960's film "Born Free", and then founder of the "Born Free" foundation. The lodge can be credited with single handedly saving this beautiful National Park which until our investment, had suffered from little or no income from visitors. Before the opening of Elsa's Kopje and subsequent income from visitors, there was talk in government of de-gazetting the park and turning the well-watered fertile land into rice plantations. Considered one of the most spectacular locations and lodge designs in Africa, Elsa's is built round a granite hill, each cottage was individually designed to take advantage of the stunning views, and the natural curves, rocks, and trees on the hillside. Cottages Nestled into the hillside, and overlooking the vast plains of Meru National Park, each of Elsa's Kopje's open-fronted cottages are unique in design and offer an elegant safari style. 9 en-suite cottages: 7 doubles and 2 twins Each cottage consists of a main bedroom, en suite bathroom (some have outdoor baths) and private deck. N.B. Cottage 3 has a private sitting room rather than deck. 4 rooms can fit one extra bed, to accommodate children under the age of 16yrs.

We set out with a single-minded determination to demonstrate just how successful integrating philanthropy into a tourism business could be. Today, looking at Guludo Beach Lodge and its impact on the surrounding area, we are very proud to see the vision realised. In 2002 we were looking for somewhere with excellent tourism potential next to extreme poverty. Guludo was the perfect fit. Guludo Beach Lodge is situated on a 12km white, palm-fringed beach in one of the poorest areas of Mozambique. Our model encompasses a commercial enterprise (Guludo Beach Lodge), which operates using fair trade principles and a charity (Nema Foundation), which partners with 16 local communities to implement projects. The lodge stimulates the local economy and develops skills while the charity tackles the root causes of poverty and environmental devastation, which are funded by donations from the lodge, its guests and our charity partners. Through our model we have provided access to clean water for 20,000 people, a school meal every day for 800 malnourished children, secondary school scholarships for 129 scholars, construction of 2 primary schools, distributed 9,500 mosquito nets and household training in nutrition, malaria, HIV, hygiene and sanitation. The lodge has over 150 local suppliers, employs 70 staff and 8 local craft enterprises sell their products to our guests… and this is all just the very tip of the iceberg. Now, because of the lodge, the local economy is developing, children are healthier, poverty is falling, environmental pressures are decreasing and there is a buzz of optimism in the region. If you are thinking that surely our business must suffer as a result of our philanthropy, you're wrong. In fact, while our competitors struggled to stay afloat, we experienced exceptional growth that is continuing into the future. We passionately believe that other businesses can adopt the same approach and play a significant part in tackling serious social and environmental issues while continuing to achieve ambitious and profitable growth.
